Yes! Bernie Wrightson. I find it hard to be excited about meeting anyone. I really am not an excitable type, after all the years of working in film an TV I really never cared much, just when do I get payed.
But now I have grown up loving art and Will Eisners letters were pretty cool because I had a deep respect for his cinematic style of story telling. But Bernie wrightson's art from the moment I first saw it come out has always fascinated me. In fact i told Mike grell how much I loved that old style of quilmanship (is that a word?). Mike told me to study guys like John Coll (good call Mike, it was right on the money), to get to a style like Bernie. His light and dark with those wonderful hand drawn quill lines, which would be shit to me had he used a ruler, base out some of the most incredible works of inked art.
His mastery of the quick form that gives our eyes just the right information they need to suck our minds into Bernies world.
I am so jealous of his penmanship. I keep trying but it is so much better just to sit and stare at his work. Bob Almond mentioned that the plates in the first Frankenstien book looked a bit saturated, widening Bernie's lines, and after checking I agree the new book is a lightyear better in quality. If ever there is a book that every fan of Art, Horror or Comic form has to have in their library it is that book. It is the best!
After meeting Bernie and Liz I have to say they are great people and I wish him all the best.
